The so-called Guptagate controversy has united groups ranging from opposition parties to the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The ANC is now so fed up that there is even a possibility of expulsion for business tycoon Atul Gupta from the African National Congress (ANC) itself. There are discussions to institute disciplinary proceedings against him for bringing the ANC into disrepute. This could be extremely embarrassing to Jacob Zuma. Jacob Zuma has very close relations with the Gupta family. His son Duduzane is a director at the Guptas' Sahara Computers and Shiva Uranium companies. His wife, Bongi Ngema-Zuma, works for Gupta-controlled JIC Mining Services as a communications officer and the Gupta family's newspaper, the New Age, benefits from regular advertisements from state-owned companies. A major concern is the recent killing of key witnesses. Mawethu Joseph Steven, widely known as Steve Khululekile regional leader of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) in Rustenburg, North West, was shot dead in a tavern, while watching a soccer game on TV by three unidentified gunmen. So far no arrests have been made.
