DA marchers clash with Cosatu

Zapiro's cartoon on the DA's march on Cosatu House to promote the youth wage subsidy that ended in stone-throwing and teargas.. Cartoon shows Costau's double standards i.e. interfering in DA's democratic protest. Cosatu through its thuggish behaviour showed intolerance towards those who disagree with it, be it employers or political parties – or at best a complete inability to control its members.

The Leadership Challenge and the Showerman Show

Due to outdated codes, traditions and rituals governing the elections of the ANC president, challengers are often afraid to announce their canditure. The opacity, secrecy and lack of transparency in internal ANC elections open the system to manipulation, corruption and the abuse. It also raises the possibility of selective prosecutions to sideline rivals. While Jacob Zuma and Gwede Mantashe have banned all public talk about the leadership succession in the party, saying such talk is premature. Reality showws every political manoeuvre by the ANC leadership now is aimed at influencing the direction of the party’s leadership election at the 2012 national elective conference in Bloemfontein (Mangaung). Now who are the challengers? Zapiro's cartoon lists:

Jellyman (Kgalema Motlanthe) - Weakness no backbone - Motlanthe, who was initially reluctant to challenge Zuma, has now told his comrades in the ANC and government that he is interested in the position. Motlanthe has kept his distance, at least publicly, from those campaigning for ANC President . Hiis presence at a rally organised by the ANC Youth League in Limpopo in March created the impression he did not mind being associated with a group campaigning for change.On the otherhand he has n't had the guts to announce his candidature.

Invisible Man (Cyril Ramphosa) - Does n't show up - Will Cyril Ramaphosa step up to the Presdential plate or is it a question of not IF but WHEN. Is he waiing for the right time. Back in 1994 he could have been made Mandela’s deputy president but at that stage lost out to Mbeki and withdrew from active politics but remained in the ANC's NEC.

Too cocky man (Tokyo Sexwale) - His annoying sidekick jujuman - Most of the Sunday papers have reported that unofficial challnger Tokyo Sexwale’s campaign – the unofficial one of course – was finally getting off the ground.

The original cartoon that was published in the Times had a mistake. The label on Invisible Man was left out. Sometimes there are deliberately little mysteries in a cartoon and it’s intriguing for the reader to work them out. But sometimes the cartoonist leaves something out by mistake because of a looming deadline and the cartoon loses a key piece of information. That’s what happened today.

The Cartoon is based on a parody of The Avengers, which is a team of superheroes, appearing in magazines published by Marvel Comics.

COP OUT - Mdluli Shifted Sideways

Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa moves controversial crime intelligence chief Richard Mdluli from the highly sensitive post to another department in the police organisation so that allegations of political interference could be probed. Zapiro's cartoon begs the question why is the Jacob Zuma allowing this problem to continue? What does Lt-Gen Mdluli have over Jacob Zuma and what are the consequences he fears should Zuma remove him from his position for good?

Richard Mdluli has had a troubled last few months:

September 2011: Charged and arrested for corruption by the Hawks after allegedly raiding a police intelligence fund for his personal use
December 2011: Corruption charges were withdrawn, no reasons were given
February 2012: Suspended as crime intelligence boss after facing a murder charge
March 2012: Reinstated to his job after investigation launched into the murder, which happened in 1999
May 2012: Removed from crime intelligence division after writing a letter alleging senior members of the police were planning his downfall

Zapiro cartoon describes the impossible that Zwelinzima Vavi of Cosatu joins Helen Zille's Democratic Alliance. The Independent Newspapers reported that Zille said COSATU leader Zwelinzima Vavi’s claim that she had tried to recruit him with the lure of the power that the pair would wield together was “absurd” Zwelinzima certainly has a lively imagination. Next he’ll probably say I asked him to marry me.”

Niehaus backtracks on ANC job claim by Stephen Grootes on May 3rd, 18:05
JOHANNESBURG - Former ANC spokesperson Carl Niehaus on Thursday denied saying that he is going to get a formal position in the ruling party.In an interview on Wednesday, he said he would be back at Luthuli House soon.On Thursday, he clashed with Talk Radio 702's David O’Sullivan over what he actually said. “I never said there said there was definitely a position at the ANC. I said that I am involved in the ANC and there may be chance of a formal position in the future.“It is for the ANC to discuss. Those were my exact words.”At that point, O’Sullivan played recordings of an earlier interview in which Niehaus is heard saying, “Soon, there will be a formal position.”The talk show host then asked Niehaus who offered him the position.“I leave it to the ANC to discuss that,” Niehaus insisted.The former spokesperson also denied saying he had paid up his debt. He said he made arrangements to repay the money he owes.
