Besides their brutal gang rapes and mutilation, both the 23-year-old woman known as “India’s daughter” and 17-year-old Anine Booysen wanted their rapists to face justice. In death they both demanded that their communities confront the horror of sexual violence. Horrified, India rose up to confront its hidden shame. South Africa knows its shame and yet does not rise up. It is too accustomed to the daily violation of the weak by those more powerful.
